Common Netbook Characteristics
As a point of interest, this is a 64 bit version of Windows 7. It turns out the Intel Atom processor is actually a 64 bit processor, although it works find on 32 bit operating systems. The biggest problem with the netbook is that it will only handle a max of 2 gig of ram, and Windows 7 64 bit wants 4 gig.
Netbooks typically have less powerful hardware than larger laptop computers and do not include an optical disc drive that contemporaneous laptops often had. Netbooks were some of the first machines to substitute a solid-state storage devices instead of a hard drive, as these were smaller, required less power, and were more shock-resistant. Unlike modern solid state drives, these early models often did not offer better performance. In 2007, laptop sales declined for the first time since 1998, while notebook sales rose. Even so, the rise of tablet computers slowed notebook sales in 2010. Subnotebook and Netbook computers by definition are PC’s which are more compact and lightweight than laptops, and offer both the ultra-portability and flexibility to be used from the hand.
You may hear people call their netbook a laptop, and that’s because they are designed to do similar tasks. Today’s market includes an amazingly wide range of netbook-style capabilities, styles and prices. But the term netbook lives on, even if it doesn’t mean exactly what it meant in 2007. Toshiba has a 10.1-inch model that it calls a netbook for about $450. Used HP, Acer, and Asus netbook models can often be found online.
Both Joli OS and MeeGo purport to be “social oriented” or social networking operating systems rather than traditional “office work production” operating systems. Netbook users can also install other UNIX-based operating systems such as FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, and Darwin. Greece provided all 13-year-old students and their teachers with netbooks in 2009 through the “Digital Classroom Initiative”.
Over time, bloated desktop software is will give way to more and more applications that run over the Internet making broadband speeds more important than CPU processing speed. A. Typically, netbooks have a smaller keyboard compared to a laptop or a desktop computer keyboard. The keys often are a little smaller, and the space between keys is narrower.
Notebooks also started featuring high-resolution screens, while the need for DVD drives was reduced as broadband Wi-Fi and streaming through services like Netflix and Spotify became ubiquitous. The exact definition of a netbook remains somewhat fluid though, and it has certainly evolved over the past year. Last year the market was shifting from 9-inch netbooks to models with 10.1-inch displays. Now this niche is split between 10.1-inch displays and 11.6-inch models, and there are even a handful of models with the 12.1-inch displays commonly found on ultraportable laptops. The HP Pavilion dv2 also falls into this category, though it is based on an AMD Athlon Neo dual-core processor.

The 8.9-inch screen is considerably smaller than other laptops, but it’s not a bother. I find the size adequate for things I would do on a small computer. My only design complaint is the narrow buttons on the left and right side of the track pad.
Netbooks are dull technology-wise, the equivalent of last year’s model. Many things have been popular because they were cheaper than the competition and although not as good, were thought to be good enough. Despite being underpowered, Netbooks will be extremely popular because they will go where no computer has gone before. Their small size and low cost will open up new applications, that we can only guess at.
